How to set up the Groww Trade API for auto trading

To place orders in your Groww account, Trade Arena uses Groww's Trade API with a TOTP token you create. You set it up once; after that Trade Arena signs in for you every morning, so there is no daily login.

What you need

  • A Groww account with F&O enabled.
  • A Groww Trade API subscription. Groww's free tier accepts orders but does not serve live prices, and Trade Arena needs the live premium to check a call before placing it and to show your position. Subscribe on groww.in/trade-api before you create the token.
  • A Trade Arena account. Sign in with Google; it's free to start.

1. Create a TOTP token on Groww

  1. Open Groww's API keys page.
  2. Choose Generate API key → TOTP and give the key a name. Groww shows the TOTP token once, with a QR code.
  3. Copy the token, and the TOTP secret behind the QR code (the text an authenticator app would scan).

Pick the TOTP type, not an access token or an approval key: an access token has to be copied again every day, and an approval key needs a click on Groww's page every morning. A TOTP token lets Trade Arena sign in for you.

2. Connect Groww to Trade Arena

  1. In Trade Arena, open Settings → Broker & IP.
  2. On the Groww card, paste the TOTP token and the TOTP secret.
  3. Click Connect Groww. Trade Arena signs in straight away, and keeps the pair only if Groww accepts it.

The token and secret are stored encrypted with AES-256-GCM on our server, never on your device, and used only to sign in to Groww for you. To remove them, tap Disconnect Groww in Settings → Broker & IP. To revoke them at Groww, delete the TOTP token on the API keys page.

3. Register your static IP

Live API orders must come from a static IP registered to you. Trade Arena gives your account a dedicated IP:

  1. Find it in Settings → Broker & IP → Dedicated trading IP.
  2. On Groww's API keys page, use Update static IP and enter the address.
  3. Tap Check connection on the Groww card. “Groww is connected.” means your orders leave from your registered IP.

Why a static IP is required.

4. Every morning: nothing to do

Groww retires every API access token at 6 AM. Trade Arena signs in again with your TOTP pair at 06:10 IST, before the market opens, so there is no daily login and nothing to copy. The pair itself does not change; you paste a new one only if you delete the token at Groww or change your Trade API plan.

If you also use Fyers

You can connect both. One is your default; each channel and each Trade Desk slot can be set to either. A position is always managed and closed at the broker that opened it.

Common problems

“Groww refused the sign-in”

The TOTP secret doesn't match the token, or the token was deleted at Groww. Create a new TOTP token and paste both again.

Orders go through, but no live prices

The app shows no price for your Groww position, a “buy now” call cannot be placed, and calls are not checked against the live premium. Your sign-in predates your Trade API subscription, or there is none. Groww stamps the plan into the token when you sign in, so a pair pasted before subscribing keeps getting prices refused. Subscribe, then paste the token and secret again on the Groww card; Trade Arena signs in afresh at once.

Commodity channels

Groww's Trade API does not trade MCX commodities, so a commodity channel stays on Fyers.
